DARD Inspectors Visit Farmers Affected by Recent Floods

DARD Reporter
28 August 2008
Following farm visits to affected areas, Minister for Agriculture & Rural Development, Michelle Gildernew, has expressed her sympathy for farmers who have suffered the loss of crops and animals as a result of recent flooding. The Minister has also met the Ulster Farmers Union to discuss their assessment of the situation.
Initial impressions are that, in general, grassland is recovering quickly, but there could be serious implications for potato crops and for the cereal harvest. The Minister has requested a full assessment of the damage from floodwater to affected arable areas.
DARD Inspectors have commenced assessments in areas where flooding is likely to have occurred and where potatoes and cereal crops are grown.
We would encourage farmers who have suffered damage from flooding to contact DARD during office hours on 028 6634 3172, giving details of their business ID, if possible their field references and crops affected.  An inspector will arrange to visit to assess the situation.
Alternatively email the same details to qab.admin@dardni.gov.uk.
