Kevin O’Donnell, CAFRE, Greenmount Campus,
Are you interested in improving your farm welding skills? If so, you should give some thought to attending a Basic Farm Welding course at the College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Enniskillen Campus.
The course will run over ten evenings, at two evenings per week for five weeks, starting in mid January 2008. The topics covered include:
  • Systems used for welding, cutting and heating
  • Safety and personal protective clothing
  • Bead Welds
  • MMA and MIG welding
  • Butt, Single Vee and fillet joints
In addition if you want to develop your welding skills further, you can then progress immediately on to the Advanced Farm Welding course also based at CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus. The topics covered on this course include: MIG corner joints, oxyacetylene welding, vertical and overhead welds and the fabrication of a piece of agricultural equipment. The Advanced course also runs over 10 evenings.
Ryan Gallagher of Boho attended the Basic Farm Welding course in March 2007 and now hopes to progress on to the Advanced course: “The skills I learned on the course were very practical and have been very useful around the farm when carrying out repairs. I’d like to do test myself on the advanced welding course next spring”
If your work is of sufficient standard in both the basic and the advanced course you will be awarded a certificate at NVQ level 2 and 3 respectively by the Open College Network for Northern Ireland. A small fee is required.
If you want more information or are interested in attending the Basic Farm Welding course or progressing onto the Advanced course contact Charlene Graffin at 028 9442 6704 or visit the CAFRE website for information on how to develop your practical agricultural skills. [external site]
