Nitrates – How to comply?

The Nitrates Action Programme aims to protect water quality by ensuring the correct amount of nutrients are applied under favourable conditions and at a time that they can be used by growing crops or grass.  It is one of the Cross Compliance Statutory Management Requirements and so farmers claiming single farm payment are required to comply with these regulations.
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is currently delivering Nitrates Directive Information Meetings for farmers throughout the Province.  These meetings detail the key measures of the Nitrates Action Programme which include:
  • Closed spreading periods,
  • Chemical fertiliser limits,
    • Nitrogen loading (stocking rate) limits,
    • Slurry Storage requirements,
    • Records required to demonstrate compliance.
For further information or to book a place please contact Jennifer Ball at Greenmount Campus, CAFRE on 028 9442 6879.
