Health and Environment

Health and safety regulations aim to reduce and control the risks to peoples' health and safety arising from work activities. You need to be aware of the regulations covering your farm diversification idea.
For guidance and information on health and safety in the workplace for small businesses contact the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland.
Fire Certificate
Some businesses such as guesthouses require a Fire Certificate. The Northern Ireland Fire Brigade[external site] is responsible for the issue of Fire Certificates under The Fire Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1984 as amended by The Fire Services (Northern Ireland).
Environmental Issues
There is a range of legislation covering environmental health issues, some of which could be relevant to your business. The areas covered are:
  • Food control including food hygiene and food safety
  • Health and safety
  • Pollution control
  • Consumer protection
For advice on any of these areas contact the environmental health officers at your local council[external site]. For advice on food related projects contact Loughry Campus - The Food Centre[external site]
