Organic farming – is 2008 the year to make the change ?

Adrian Saunders, Organic Development Adviser,
Greenmount Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Antrim

The number of local farms converting to organic production continues to increase across all sectors as the market remains buoyant due to still increasing consumer demand.
This last year has been a particularly difficult one for farming in many respects. Organic farming with its less intensive nature and integrated approach to feed and fodder production, may therefore be an attractive option for 2008.
The Northern Ireland Rural Development Plan 2007-13 proposes to offer Organic Farming Scheme support in 2008. Regulations are at an advanced stage of development, and it is expected to open once it has been approved by the Assembly.

The CAFRE Organic Team regularly delivers a two-day course entitled 'Introduction to Organic Production'. This is aimed at farmers and growers who have little knowledge of what organic production entails or how to go about it. Over the years it has been a key factor in allowing participants to make the decision to ‘go organic’.
The programme includes information on the basic principles of organic production, the requirements for certification by an organic certification body, funding available and access to potential markets. There are also enterprise options to suit livestock and horticultural interests.
On the second day, participants have the opportunity to visit the 36ha mixed livestock/arable Greenmount Organic Unit. The important topic of animal health is also considered, and a step-by-step guide to the process of conversion to organic production is provided.
The 2-day course will be delivered on Tuesday 15 and Tuesday 22 January 2008 at Greenmount Campus, Antrim.
There is no charge for the course, but places must be booked in advance, no later than Friday 23 March, by ringing Adrian Saunders at Greenmount Campus on (028)94426765.
