Training for commercial vegetable production
Dr Anne Stone, Edible Crops Development Adviser, CAFRE
The College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) has developed a training course for people who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in commercial vegetable growing. The training programme is aimed at new entrants to the vegetable sector and will be delivered this autumn involving attendance at five workshops:
- local and national supply chains,
- best practice in vegetable husbandry,
- establishment costs, for example, machinery and equipment,
- pest and disease control for a range of vegetable crops
- growing vegetables under protection.
People attending the entire programme will have an opportunity to visit commercial grower’s holdings, to walk their crops in the field and listen to their experiences of growing edible crops. Crops covered will include leeks, scallions, carrots, parsnips, cabbages, brussels sprouts, cauliflowers and celery.
