Weaner Accommodation

Pig accommodation.
  • Pigs are weaned into the first stage accommodation at 26-28 days.
  • The first stage weaner rooms are accessed by a 1.2m wide passage.
  • Two of the eight rooms are filled each week.
  • An all in all out policy is operated with rooms washed and disinfected between batches
Ventilation & heating control.
  • The ventilation and heating are computer controlled.
  • Two wall mounted heaters positioned below the inlets heat the incoming air.
  • The temperature is set initially at 30C. It is reduced gradually after 4-5 days to 22C by the time the pigs are moved to the second stage accomodation.
Wide dry feeders.
  • Ad lib 1.2m (4’) wide dry feeders are used.
  • 1kg of first stage creep is fed to the pigs.This includes the creep fed in the farrowing house and for 5 days after weaning.
  • 3kg of second stage creep and 3 kgs of link are fed to the weaners.
  • The pigs are on the weaner ration for 10 days before being moved to the second stage accomodation at 16kgs.
  • Smaller pigs are given extra creep .
Pigs in pen.
  • Pigs are penned in groups of 18 at a stocking rate of 0.2sqm (2.2sqft).
  • Water is supplied by two nipple drinkers at the back of each pen.
  • Turkey drinkers are set into each pen for a few days post weaning to encourage intakes
