Benchmarking
Sustainable profits are the key to business strength and in turn provide the basis for growth. Producers who see their future in pigs need to be competitive and to do so need to review both physical and financial performance against similar units. The Greenmount Pig Benchmarking Project assists producers assess the performance of their units and provides realistic targets on which to focus.
Why benchmark?
Benchmarking a business allows producers to:
- Assess the physical performance of the unit
- Calculate the cost of production on their unit, and
- Compare costs and performance with other units.
By comparing business performance with that of others, individual producers can identify the specific strengths and weaknesses of their business. This helps focus efforts on the areas of performance that will make the greatest difference to unit profit.
Benchmarking provides the business information required to determine the best way forward for the development of the business. Over a number of years it will also reveal if management changes have worked and highlight if any further changes are needed.
