Dairying Technology Projects

The 2002 Review Body Report on Education and Research & Development in Agriculture and Food Science in N. Ireland recommended that the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) should be responsible for the government provision of Technology Transfer within N. Ireland.
This section of the RuralNi Portal provides information on Technology Developments investigated by the CAFRE Dairying Technology Team based at Greenmount Campus and by CAFRE Dairying Development Advisers based locally across N. Ireland

What is "Technology Transfer”?

A Technology” can be a system of management, a new product, a new piece of equipment, a new management practice, a new IT application or an existing technology which has become more relevant due to changing market requirements  or new legislative conditions.
Technolgy transfer is the process of investigation, demonstration and on-farm adoption of new and existing technologies. CAFRE technologists investigate technologies to determine whether they can provide economic, environmental, animal welfare or labour efficiency benefits to Northern Ireland farmers. Relevant technologies are highlighted and demonstrated by CAFRE Development Advisers and Technologists to farmers through publications, press articles, farm demonstrations training courses and Challenge” programmes. Through the Challenge programmes, farmers receive on-farm mentoring to assist them in adopting suitable technology
Each report highlights the benefits to dairy farmers from adopting the technology under the key driver headings of:
  • Production efficiency
  • Labour efficiency
  • Environmental benefits
  • Animal welfare benefits
  • Costs and benefits
The Technologies featured are grouped under the headings listed below:
