This project was run in partnership with Samuel McCausland, DARD, First Trust Bank and the EC.The aim of the project is to demonstrate progressive farming practices for grass-based livestock enterprises by focusing on -

- Nutrient management
- Grass budgeting
- Extended grazing
- Silage systems
Hybrid Ryegrasses - 'A revitalised resource'
This report is an overview of new advances in the breeding and exploitation of hybrid ryegrass varieties by specialists who initially worked independently and now alongside commercial partners are pooling their expertise through an exciting new project entitled Grassland Management:- Practice into Profit. The work offers a new opportunity for farmers to produce more grass from the same land without increasing costs!

Our current objective for the Greenmount dairy herd is to keep milking and dry cows out until we reach our winter cover target (calculated so as not to jeopardise early spring grass availability and turnout).

Performance of the six GMPIP focus fields established in 1997 and 1998 is reported in terms of grass yield and chemical composition along with associated animal performance results throughout the 1999 season.
