Measuring grass using a plate meter
METHODS

Three farmers cartoon

Three methods for measuring grass.
  • plate meter,
  • by eye
  • scissor clips
Considerations
  • none of these methods are clinically accurate
  • use whatever method suits you best
  • must identify when average farm cover is rising or falling in order to react quickly to grass surplus or deficit
  • grass cover estimate is influenced by sward density, grass height, maturity, species and growth rate

DECISIONS

Grass Measurement tool
Routine grass monitoring helps the farm decide when, where, how long and how severely to graze a paddock.

Example Calculation

paddock size 1.1 ha
entry cover 3200 KG DM/ha
residual 1500 KG DM/ha in 24 hours day and night graze
è 110 cows ate 17 KG grass DM each
