Dairy Herd Fertility Challenge to improve fertility performance
Infertility has been identified as the number one problem on dairy farms and is estimated to cost dairy farmers in Northern Ireland approximately £50 million per year. Improving fertility performance will decrease culling rates and reduce replacement costs.
Aim
To help you enhance your business performance by improving your herd’s submission and conception rates. Benefits to your business

- Adapt housing layout to improve fertility management
- Improve profitability by up to £88 per cow per year through improved fertility performance

What is involved?
This Challenge focuses on the areas that impact on the fertility of dairy cows and covers seven topics including - Heat detection;
- Insemination management;
- Fertility and health;
- Breeding for fertility
Local group meetings will help you learn from others whilst also receiving support from your local Dairying Development Adviser. There will be visits to farms to demonstrate best practice and advice from veterinary practitioners and artificial insemination specialists, to help you identify possible improvements on your farm. On completion, there is an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification.
