Wet Feet

In some young orchards a percentage of trees are showing early autumn colours, which is usually an early warning of root problems primarily caused by 'wet feet'. Crown rot and collar rot caused by Phytophthora species are symptoms found in infected trees due to 'wet feet'.
If symptoms are detected early it may be possible to save trees. By examining the base of the rootstock, you may find some signs of rotting. Ridomil Plus or Ridomil Plus 50 WP is recommended for control of Phytophthora collar rot to non-fruiting trees as an autumn or spring drench. Check the product label for full details on use.
Aliette is also recommended for control of collar and crown rot as a high volume spray applied to trees in the spring. Check product label for details of use. Check young orchards now for signs of early autumn colours, particularly on high-risk sites and treat as appropriate (eg., MM 106 Rootstock on old site).
Site selection and soil water management is most important in preventing 'wet feet'.
Ensure that all trees in all orchards are properly tied to the stake prior to the winter wind
