Greenkeeping
Golf is a major industry employing about 3000 persons in NI and worth about £90 million in Ireland.
Construction of the Campus golf facilities began in 1989 with two high specification USGA greens and Links at a cost of £25, 000 each.
Since then NVQ level 2 and 3 students have been involved in the construction of two further greens , a Parkland and a Pure Sand Green, and green tees, bunkers and the design and installation of automatic pop up irrigation system.
The golf course was established for the following reasons:
- To demonstrate the range of golf green types found in the UK
- To demonstrate the different management requirements of each green type
- To show that low cost construction methods be suitable for farm diversification enterprises and these can achieve the highest professional standards in turf management.
- To allow students realistic work experience by maintaining the facility
The course was designed to allow a wide range of golf shots to be played and the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) use the facility for the training and practice of teams prior to completion.
At present about 60 greenkeepers attend the college and have the opportunity to develop their skill on the different sports surfaces.
